In the early 16th century, Khiva became the capital of the Timurid Empire, developing into a bustling slave market and the political and economic center of the khanate. This lasted for over three centuries, until the Russian Empire absorbed the region in the 19th century.

To prevent the release of toxic fumes, they set the crater alight, expecting it to burn out in a few days. Over 50 years later, the fire still burns.
